“Woven R17” Insulation

“Woven R17” Insulation

I wondered what this “Woven R17 Insulation” was that I recently saw on the internet. Then, after reading a few articles, I realized it is just a new or hype insulation name with an R-value of 17. It was a company attempting to rebrand its insulation. Hence, someone created this name and attached it to a standard R17 reflective insulation that has been popular for quite some time. There is some merit to the name “woven R17” if you understand it as a particular woven outer layer and an insulation rating of R17. However, the name is more of a description than a type of insulation. I’m not trying to rain on anyone’s parade, but a spade must be called a spade!

The R-value of 17 is sufficient for 50% of the climates in the US, so it has value no matter what material is attached to create it. Traditional R17 reflective insulation is often installed in structures like steel buildings, pole barns, and homes. The new “woven R17” is marketed as solid and easy to install. Here are the erection instructions for R-17 Reflective insulation.

Here are the key points listed on the internet regarding its description:

Basic Specifications:

  • Needless to say, the R-value is 17. This offers good insulation for most climates.
  • Material: Since Woven R-17 isn’t a particular brand, it can be made of fiberglass or similar insulating materials wrapped in a tough woven fabric.
  • Shape: Since the name signifies R-value and the material is inconsistent, it is primarily viewed as an item that comes in rolls or batts and is easy to cut and fit in different spaces.
  • Size and Thickness: There is no set size. What’s important is matching the R17 rating with sizes to fit standard spaces.
  • Vapor Barrier: Some insulation types will naturally have a vapor barrier to stop moisture and prevent mold. Again, this is not necessarily a requirement for “woven R-17.

What are the advantages noted to Woven R-17 I read:

  • It is noted as resilient, strong, durable, and tear-resistant; therefore, it is easy to utilize.
  • Simple to install without tearing.
  • Moisture-resistant, especially with a vapor barrier, to keep your space dry and mold-free.
  • Since it is flexible, it can be used in residential, commercial, and agricultural buildings.
  • An R-value of 17 will save you on heating and cooling costs.

Primary Purposes:

  • Though it can be used for multiple purposes, it is ideal for steel buildings and pole buildings. It protects structures against condensation and radiant heat transfers.
  • Farms, to keep animals or stored items at a steady temperature.
  • It is an excellent retrofit insulation for older buildings because it is light and easy to install.

Woven R17 insulation is an R-value and not a particular type of insulation. The information above reflects 17 Reflective insulations.
