Installing Fiberglass WMP-VR-R Insulation

Installing Fiberglass WMP-VR-R Insulation

There are more than one way of installing fiberglass WMP-VR-R insulation in a steel building. The building type, column spacings, and sheeting profile will influence the method and thickness of insulation chosen. For example, if you are installing insulation in a Tube Structure, you will only apply a 3″ or less thickness.

Here’s an efficient and popular step-by-step guide to installing a vapor barrier, metal building insulation, or traditional pole barn insulation. Please note that this is a new construction method, not a retrofit. I would recommend you review some insulation instruction videos on YouTube for more precise instructions:

Basic Tools Needed For Installing Fiberglass WMP-VR-R Insulation

  • Obviously, you need your fiberglass insulation rolls with WMP-VR-R facing (vapor retarder, reinforced white facing) to start.
  • You should have available banding, Patch, and Double-Sided Tape (matching white or black vapor retarder tape).
  • Insulation utility knife or equivalent to cut the insulation
  • You should have on glasses, gloves, dust mask since the small insulation particles can cause irritation
  • Ruler or measuring tape
  • Lift or scaffolding (for roof insulation installation)

WMP-VR-R Installing Preparation

  1. You want to inspect your framing, meaning you should ensure that the purlins, girts, and I-beams are clean so that tape and insulation have proper contact.
  2. Be Aware of how your insulation will roll out – your blankets should run perpendicular to the purlins (on the roof) or girts (on the walls).
  3. Have Your Protective Gear On When You Start – You would be amazed how many people start their installation without wearing their protective gear. Remember, fiberglass can cause skin irritation and also affect your lungs. Putting it on after being exposed is not wise.

Time To Do The WMP-VR Facing Roof Installation

  1. Unroll Blanket WMP-VR insulation facing – You will start at one end bay and roll out the fiberglass WMP-VR-R over the top of the purlins, with the black or white facing pointing downward toward the building interior.
  2. The Overlap edges – Some tapes overlap, while others are stable. If you are taping, position the insulation so that the facing edges overlap by at least 2 inches.
  3. Keep the Insulation Supported – Use double-sided tape, stick pins, or banding to hold insulation in place until roof panels are installed.
  4. When installing roof sheeting – You will lay the roof sheeting or panels over the insulation, fastening them to the purlins. When this is done, it compresses and secures the fiberglass in place.

Installing the Wall Insulation

  1. Use a cutting device to cut insulation to height – Once you have measured the wall bays, you will cut insulation blankets accordingly. Once cut, the blanket or rolls are considered batts.
  2. Insert insulation between girts or roll over girts – Place fiberglass with the facing toward the inside of the building.
  3. Hold Insulation in Place Use stick tape, pins, or banding to hold the insulation against the wall girts before siding goes up.
  4. Pin Down or Fasten the Wall Sheeting – When you fasten the wall sheeting, you are securing the insulation in place.

Wrapping Up by Sealing & Finishing off Your Installation

Lastly, look at trim – These are the areas that always need attention. Neatly cut around framed openings (doors, windows) and seal edges efficiently.

Thermal Efficiency by Sealing Seam – Purchase WMP-VR-R insulation tape to seal all facing overlaps, staple holes, or cuts. This ensures a continuous vapor barrier and thermal efficiency.

Look Over Your Work – A wise person always checks over completed work. Look for gaps, tears, or compressed Vinyl faced fiberglass insulation areas that need addressing. Remember, your initial purpose: To effectively install insulation in your steel building or pole barn, you must inspect your work. Gaps, tears, or compressed areas will undoubtedly affect the thermal efficiency of your insulation. Make your DIY project a rewarding endeavor.
