Fiberglass Insulation will loose some of its R-value as well as crack

Eventually, fiberglass insulation will get wet and once it does it will lose its R-Value. The trapped water will also cause mold, rust, and oxidation. Not to mention, fiberglass insulation isn’t a radiant barrier. However, our High R-Value Reflective insulation is not affected by humidity. Remember there will always be some humidity and insulation must work in these conditions. Take a look at the picture on the right, eventually, this is the outcome of Fiberglas Insulation. Not to mention, it is quite common to notice some sagging and flaking a few years after installation.

Reflective Bubble Insulation

Double Bubble insulation for metal buildings will offer some R-value, a radiant and vapor barrier. Beyond this point, they have little in common with our high-R-value insulation. You see, FSO’s insulation of polyethylene foam center keeps its shape when exposed to numerous forces. This is very important! Under pressure, if insulation collapses, it loses its capacity to be an effective radiant and vapor barrier. With a 6-psi pressure, FSO’s high R-Value insulation only collapses 6%. Keep in mind, that when the pressure is relieved, it fully forms back to its initial shape! This is not the case with Single or double-bubble insulation for metal buildings.

Single or Double Bubble Insulation

This insulation is composed of air bubbles sandwiched between metal surfaces. Double bubble simply means a second layer of bubbles; however, we have found there isn’t much difference in performance between the two. Once a bubble is punctured it naturally loses some of its shape as well as radiant and vapor protection. Remember, all bubbles can pop! Conclusion: The Double Bubble insulation for metal buildings r value value will decrease.

Installations Procedures:

The method you choose will determine the materials you will need:

  • Reflective or Double-Sided Tape
  • Steel sealant
  • Metal Pins and Caps
  • Knife

  • Reflective Tape – purpose is to seal the seams. This is applied to Reflective (White facing). It is not need with R17 because there is a adhesive already on the rolls and for R22, a heat gun is used to seal the seams.
  • Double-Sided Tape purpose is to make sure the insulation doesn’t blow away during the installation process as well as helps attach insulation to the surfaces and seals seams.
  • Steel Sealant – Is a super glue that is used to attached insulation with the metal pin to surfaces such as wood, aluminum, steel and much more.
  • Metal Pins and Caps – Are used to attached insulation to surfaces such as wood, aluminum, steel and much more.
  • Knife – To cut insulation
  • Heat Gun – Purpose is to seal the seams on our R22

Installation for New Metal Building Construction 

  1. The first step is to apply double-sided tape on purlins to keep insulation from blowing away 
  2. Then simply roll the insulation (whether reflective or fiberglass) perpendicular to the purlin.
  3. The insulation should sag approximately 2′ inches to create a air-cap.
  4. It is best to purchase reflective tape or double-sided tape to seal each seam. If you are purchasing our R-Value 17, it has an adhesive attached to the rolls (picture on the right); therefore, you don’t need seam tape. If you are purchasing an R-22, it seals with a Heat gun (picture in the middle).
  5. Lastly, attached sheeting.

Installation for New Pole Barn Construction 

  1. Apply double-sided tape on top of framing to keep insulation from blowing away.
  2. Then roll the insulation (whether reflective or fiberglass) perpendicular to the purlin.
  3. Have cap nails, screws with locking washers. Alternative is 1/2″ staples to directly attach the insulation to the wood framing.
  4. Again, for best performance, create a airspace of 3/4″ or more. 3/4″ furring strips are great. Another option to create an airspace is to push the insulation in a few inches.
  5. Again if you have purchased R 15.3 (white), tape the seam with reflective tape. 

Insulation steps for Erected Steel Structures

The retrofitting instructions refer to buildings with or without prior insulation layers. It also refers to buildings that already have sheeting installed.


Tubular Buildings

  1. The insulation is rolled perpendicular to the framing. Don’t be concerned about the space between the framing because the insulation is laying the opposite direction.
  2. The insulation is attached using self -drilling screws. We recommend 3/4″ screws with locking washers.
  3. If you are buying Reflective (white facing) R15.3, purchase reflective tape to seal seams. This is not needed with R22 or R17 orders. With R22, the seams are attached with a heat gun. With R17, there is adhesive attached to each roll. 

I -Beam and Web Steel Structures

Two common insulation methods used below

Method 1: The insulation is attached with the use of pins and caps. 

Items needed: Reflective tape, Metal Sealant, Pins and caps

  1. Start by putting a glob of glue on base of the pin. Then press the pin on to the sheeting. Space the pins 1 every square foot. It will take approximately 24 hours for glue to fully secure.
  2. Push the insulation through the pin. Once done, put the cap on the pin to secure the insulation
  3. Then snip the end of the pins. 

Method 2: Your insulation is attached with double sided and glue

  1. A line of glue and double side tape should run adjacent to each other on the bottom on the I-beam. The tape is a short-term hold and the glue is a longer-term hold. 

For best performance, make sure to have a 3/4″ air -cap or more. Also, make sure you seal the seams.

Insulation Steps for Erected Pole Barn Structures

The retrofitting instructions refer to buildings with or without prior insulation layers. It also refers to buildings that already have sheeting installed.

Retrofitting Insulation between purlins and girts

  1. When attaching insulation between The Framing

Use cap nails, and screws that have locking washers. The alternative is 1/2″ stables. For best results, leave air 1″ air gap.

Step #1- Start by calculating a wholesale price online.

Step #3 – Pay the brokerage fee & Sign Proposal/Contract

$1,000 Steel Building Brokerage Fee. $550 Insulation Brokerage Fee.

  • Building and Fiberglass Insulation Orders – After proposal is signed and profit amount is paid, the customer pays a building deposit (30% of total) directly to the Certified “IAS” manufacturer within 5 days of order. For Fiberglass insulation orders, the balance is paid directly to certified insulation laminator within 3 days of order.
  • Reflective Insulation OrdersPay the full insulation cost to Factory Steel Overstock after (same day) receiving the quoted savings. Questions call 1-888-512-1116

Step #4- Receive Order Confirmation # and a Scheduling Letter

Once Factory Steel Overstock receives a Building Order, a Summation of the Order is emailed before the order is processed. This step enables the customer an additional opportunity to review their Building Order before engineering and plan design can begin. Once the order is submitted to the certified IAS fabricator, the customer receives a Scheduling Letter that includes the Job#, the expected date of plan completion, and a week of building delivery.

  • Insulation Orders – Customers receive an Order Acknowledgement (Order Confirmation) email that includes the Order job #.

Step #5 – Receive Certified Building Plans or Insulation Cut List

Building Orders – Customers receive 2 FREE sets of certified stamped anchor bolt plans, with erection instructions as well as a letter of certification via Fed Express. A PDF of plans is mailed upon customer request. Customers normally bring these documents to their local building department for permits. A Fiberglass Insulation Cut List can be emailed upon customer request.

  • Building Orders -Certified plans are completed within 3-4 weeks and buildings are normally delivered within 9 weeks.

Step #6 – Get a Confirmed Scheduled Delivery Date

Two weeks before building deliveries, the customer receives an email with the exact Shipping (or Pick Up) date and “Balances Due”. Buildings are delivered Monday through Friday at 8:00 am. Customers pay balances 10 days before delivery. A COD payment option has to be approved at the time of order.

  • Insulation Orders- Customers receive a call confirming the delivery date 48 hours before delivery. Reflective Insulation is delivered within 7-10 days from order and Fiberglass insulation is delivered within 2 to 3 weeks.

Step #7 – Accept Materials and Sign for Delivery

Customers will receive a bill of the label (inventory sheet) when the truck arrives. Simple sign this sheet that acknowledges delivery of materials.
